Australia claimed a 21-run victory over England in the second Women’s Ashes ODI at Melbourne’s Junction Oval, securing a 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Defending 180 runs, Australia’s bowlers dominated, dismissing England for 159 in 41 overs. Leg-spinner Alana King was the standout performer, earning Player of the Match honours for her brilliant all-round display. King scored a crucial 13 off 39 balls and delivered an exceptional bowling spell of 4/25 in 10 overs, dismantling England’s middle order.

“I played a lot of cricket here growing up and even started off my professional career at Victoria, so this place will always be pretty special to me,” King said. “Having the Shane Warne Stand now, it was pretty surreal.”

England’s captain, Heather Knight, expressed frustration over her team’s collapse during the chase.

“It’s frustrating; I feel like it was there for the taking,” Knight said. “The wickets cost us. We need to be a bit braver with the bat.”

Australia’s Elyse Perry contributed with a vital 60 off 74 balls to guide the hosts to a competitive total. England’s Sophie Ecclestone impressed with figures of 4/35, keeping the Australians in check early.

Meanwhile, Georgia Wareham commented on the challenges of preparing for Test cricket due to limited opportunities in the format.

“That can get a little hard; it gets a bit frustrating not getting the opportunity to do that,” Wareham said.

Australia’s victory puts them in a commanding position heading into the final ODI, while England must regroup to avoid a clean sweep.
